The Best Way for Women to Increase Their Income from Home
If you are wanting to supplement your income with another income source, if you are interested in starting a side hustle or starting something new so you can change careers, this post is for you!
As a financial coach, I have more and more prospective clients and clients come to me who want more flexibility in their works hours and where they work, many want to work remotely and some just want to increase their monthly income. There are many different things that you can do, but this is one that is very timely that can be a huge benefit to you if you want to increase your income working from your computer or laptop.
What is a Virtual Assistant?
A virtual assistant is someone who works from home (or whatever you would like!) and provides services and support for another or multiple entrepreneur/business owners.
The need for virtual assistants for entrepreneurs (online and in person) is an ever-increasing need in today’s world. It is a huge benefit for entrepreneurs to be able to hire virtual assistants because it can be easier than bringing on a full-time employee and having their specific task needs met. This is why when my financial coaching clients are asking me how to increase their income and they don’t want to go get another “job,” I always recommend VA work as the first suggestion.
What Does a Virtual Assistant Do?
Virtual Assistants (VA’s for short), can do a very wide variety of tasks. Here is a short list (but the list really does go on!)
- Email management/filtering
- Graphic & document creation
- Calendar management
- Booking meetings with clients
- Client management
- Social media management/scheduling
- Proofreading content
- Creating reports
- Compiling information, market research
- Booking travel
- Transcription
- Repurposing content (ex: taking a blog and turning it into social media posts)
- Preparing slideshows
- Blog management
- Community support (ex: Facebook groups)
- Audio/video/podcast editing
- SEO
- Tech support
- Writing content
- Organizing files and content
- Pinterest management
- Market research
- Email marketing
- Newsletter creation
- Website creation, website updates
- Any tasks that an entrepreneur or business owner is needing or skills that you possess from your own career, from schooling you’ve taken or from your hobbies!
- Etc, etc
How do I Get Hired or Get Clients as a Virtual Assistant?
You can work for multiple entrepreneurs or you can be a full-time VA for just one entrepreneur. The most common way when you are beginning is to have several clients that you provide services to and support them in their businesses. There are SO many different entrepreneurs who use VA’s and who are beginning to work with them, so don’t limit the types of people that you think could use your services!
- You can begin by posting it on your Facebook page
- In Facebook groups you are a part of
- Talk with your friends and asking them to spread the word, you might never know who can make a connection for you, or just happens to know of someone looking!
- Reach out to local businesses (this is how one of my friends began her very successful side hustle doing this)
- Reach out to local entrepreneur groups and let them know you are looking for work (sometimes local entrepreneurs aren’t sure where to look for a VA either, so this is a great option)
- Many times your other clients will come from, referrals from the clients you currently have or have worked with. All of the VA’s that I have worked with, have come from referrals of my entrepreneur friends, who were their clients.
Is Being a Virtual Assistant Actually Profitable?
You can definitely become profitable being a Virtual Assistant, it really depends on how much you want to work and what skills you are offering! The higher level your skills are, the more you can charge a premium for the services that you are providing.
It all depends what your goal is, you can be a VA to supplement your 9-5 income as a side hustle or you can do it to replace your 9-5 income and become your own boss, full time. There are many VA’s who earn $10K a month and more, including Kayla Sloan an incredible VA who actually teaches prospective VA’s and VA’s how to be successful and profitable.
Benefits of Being a Virtual Assistant
First and foremost, you can be working from anywhere! Just as long as it has wifi!
You don’t need to pay for gas to drive in to a specific location, you don’t need to put on makeup and you don’t have specific hours you have to put in! It is based on tasks and projects, so as long as you are getting your work done on time, that’s really all that matters. So, you could fit this in in the early hours of the morning, throughout the day or late at night, it really doesn’t matter. This also means that you can be more flexible with your vacations. Instead of having to coordinate like you do with an in-person job, you can complete work ahead of time and if need be, you can do some of the work when you are traveling or even while you are waiting in the airport if you are flying somewhere.
Frequently Asked Questions About Becoming a Virtual Assistant
What if I have no experience as a VA?
That’s ok! Kayla will teach you exactly what a VA is and does, and what VAs shouldn’t be expected to do, too!
I know what a VA is, but I’ve never had a VA job before!
Don’t sweat it! Kayla will teach you how to find and land your first client. You can even see the exact emails she’s used to get VA jobs!
What kind of skills do I need to be a VA?
You do need a basic knowledge of computers, applications, and social media. Everything else can be learned. In fact, one of the best things about being a VA is getting paid to learn new skills!
I have a full-time job. Can I still be a successful VA?
Absolutely! You don’t have to be a full-time VA to be successful. But, your earnings may be lower since you don’t have as much time.
Did you know that being a Virtual Assistant is becoming so popular that colleges are now offering courses to help? But, instead of spending thousands of dollars on a certificate or degree, try taking advice from the experts.

My Other Top Side Hustle Recommendation
Bookkeeping!
This is actually one of my favorite ones for women because it’s one of the most consistent forms of recurring income.
Once you get a client, you have very little marketing to do and it’s fairly easy to keep that client (obviously you have to do good work.) because entrepreneurs need their books done each month.
Now I know what you might be thinking, but Mandyy, I don’t know anything about bookkeeping! That’s okay! You can absolutely learn, even if you’re not a numbers person!
You don’t need to be an accountant or trained bookkeeper, you can take a course to learn how to do this (and it’s much cheaper than going back to school and gives you a greater ROI). Check out the link below for a great course that I recommend that will help you to build the skills as a bookkeeper, to start bringing in monthly *recurring* income! (recurring income is the best kind of income!).
I know a woman who started bookkeeping as a side hustle and she was able to leave her job as a teacher because her bookkeeping income exceeded her teaching income AND she had way more flexibility and freedom.
I think bookkeeping is such a great income source that I’m actually working on adding it to as another income source for myself!
